Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Keweenaw
Mountain Lodge located? The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge is located in upper
Michigan, at the northern-most tip of the Keweenaw
Peninsula, along highway 41. The Keweenaw Peninsula
(pronounced “key-win-awe”) is surrounded on 3 sides by
the clear waters of Lake Superior, the world’s largest
fresh water lake. The Peninsula is accessed by crossing
one of the few lift bridges in the United States,
spanning the Portage Canal in Houghton and Hancock,
Michigan.
How far is the Lodge from major city centers? The Lodge is located within an easy day’s drive from
Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis, with major
freeways linking much of the way. From Green Bay,
Wisconsin--Duluth, Minnesota--and, Mackinac Island and
Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan, it is a scenic 4 to 5 hour
drive over lightly traveled two lane blacktop roads with
breathtaking views of Lakes Michigan and Superior
en route.
What is the history of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge? The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge was conceived and
constructed during the Great Depression years of the
1930’s. One of hundreds of public works projects
sponsored by the federal government at that time,
unemployed copper miners were re-employed to clear the
land on which the Lodge and its golf course now reside.
The trees that were cut were used to construct the main
lodge and guest cabins. These hand hewn log structures
have been carefully preserved for almost 70 years, and
are a rare and unique step back in time.
What is the Keweenaw Peninsula like? What is there to
see and do? The Keweenaw Peninsula is one of a few remaining
pristine environments in North America. Originally
populated in the 1800’s for its rich copper reserves,
small mining communities dot the mountainous, forest
terrain. After the mines closed, the communities and
pristine natural environment remained. The Keweenaw
Peninsula was deemed a national historic park in the
1990’s, and significant initiatives have been undertaken
to preserve the historic mining structures, and its
uniquely untouched ecosystem.
Historic tours, outdoor
activities, shopping and dining abound. Copper Harbor,
next to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge on highway 41, is a
treasure-trove of gift stores and local art galleries.
Historic Ft. Wilkins in Copper Harbor, a northern
frontier army fort constructed in 1844, offers exhibits
and living history interpretations. Boat cruises from
Copper Harbor provide access to the Copper Harbor
Lighthouse, one of the oldest on Lake Superior. The old
mining communities that dot highway 41 offer copper mine
tours, and an interesting selection of antique and gift
shops. Hunting, fishing, cross-county and down-hill
skiing are a few of the many sports enjoyed by local and
visiting sports enthusiasts. Highway 26 that runs along
northwest shore of the Peninsula offers
spectacular views of the Lake Superior shoreline, and
Brockway Mountain. From the top of Brockway Mountain,
visitors enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Superior.
For kayaking,
canoeing, hiking and mountain biking
enthusiasts, Lake
Superior, pristine
inland glacial lakes and streams, and a network
of
non-motorized trails
abound. Sea kayak, canoe and bike rentals are
available just steps
from The Lodge in historic Copper Harbor. Many
of the
mountain trails can
be accessed directly from The Lodge property,
and connect to the greater non-motorized network
of about 20 miles. Information on
rentals, trail and
waterway systems are available at The Lodge's
front
desk.
What is the weather like?
The summer weather in the Keweenaw is spectacular. The
waters of Lake Superior act as a giant air-conditioner,
making summer days and evenings a sunny yet cool retreat
from the heat a short drive farther south. For winter
sports enthusiasts, Lake Superior gears up its lake
effect snow-making properties to provide a blanket of
snow from December until April for local and visiting
cross-county and down-hill skiers. To see the current
